Tired of missing your target? 3 Easy ways to Focus…

Focus - Trim The Sails

What is your current aim or focus? We’ve all had the experience of setting goals, getting distracted, losing focus and missing our targets. How is it that others seem to be able to find their way to seemingly be always “in the zone” and on target? Like an illusionist, it is not as it seems…

Achieving focus is like sailing…

one must always be monitoring the current tact,  trimming the sails and adjusting the rudder to point the point of the bow back toward the goal. Guided missiles work on this same principal. They have an internal guidance system combined with a gyroscope that gives them a stable reference to measure, determine the adjustments necessary and modify their course to achieve their purpose.

Here are some ideas to get the focus back and maintain it…

Here’s a snippet from Entrpreneur.com titled How to Stay Focused: Train Your Brain

Our brains are finely attuned to distraction, so today’s digital environment makes it especially hard to focus. “Distractions signal that something has changed,” says David Rock, co-founder of the NeuroLeadership Institute and author of Your Brain at Work (HarperCollins, 2009). “A distraction is an alert  says, ‘Orient your attention here now; this could be dangerous.'” The brain’s reaction is automatic and virtually unstoppable.

So, like the sailboat and missile we spoke of before, our brains trigger on changes in our environment and we must make decisions based on subby’s (the subconscious) reactionary call to action!

Try these three tips to help you become more focused and productive:

1) Do creative work first…

Typically, we do mindless work first and build up to the toughest tasks. That drains your energy and lowers your focus. “An hour into doing your work, you’ve got a lot less capacity than (at the beginning),” Rock says. “Every decision we make tires the brain.”

In order to focus effectively, reverse the order. Check off the tasks that require creativity or concentration first thing in the morning, and then move on to easier work, like deleting emails or scheduling meetings, later in the day.

So, one trick is to shift focus on creative tasks from the start. Now let’s look at another tip from deepexistence.com

2) Drop worry and guilt, pick up courage…

It might be surprising to see dropping worry and guilt as the number one step to getting focused, but you’ll find this intuitive when you consider your experience. Guilt and worry freeze us because they “take over” the mind. They must leave because focus requires our full mental arsenal.

3) Reduce or eliminate distractions…

Now let’s wrap it up with actual steps in their entirety from http://liveyourlegend.net/ (What a fitting site name right!).

This morning I woke up, brewed some Yerba Mate, caught a glorious rooftop sunrise and proceeded to get more done before breakfast than I had in the past 4 working days combined.

How about you? How many important things did you get done last week? I mean the things that actually got you closer to your biggest goals and dreams.

Take a minute to think about it and write a couple down. How many did you come up with?

For many the answer is few if any at all. Why?

In a word: Distraction.

Lack of focus is the most common killer of making things happen.

In the last 10+ years there’s been an unconscious shift from encouraging focus to condemning it. It’s happening without us knowing and we’re all likely victims. As soon as multitasking became possible and encouraged, our focus died.

Mine certainly did.

We have to fight our very best fight to get it back.

Leo Babauta is leading the charge with his book Focus, which is more than worth the read. I hit up a sweet barefoot run with Leo last week where he filled me in on some of the good stuff. Unbelievably powerful.

Without focus we are headed for disaster and the consequences are as dangerous as they come.

What’s the biggest risk of losing our focus? Wasting our time and living a meaningless life.

The solution is to simplify. Get back to the basics of doing the important.

So, there you have it, a killer set of thoughts and insights as to how you can bring focus and productivity back into your day. The actions are easy if you really take them as individual tasks. We all know, it is the 67 days of forced HABIT installation where the difficulty lies.

Those who have been through the Master Key Experience know this path well. We have focused on what we really want, found the core emotions that will infuse our every cell with the urgency to make forward progress every day and spent 6 months in a Master Mind Alliance to install the HABITS that help us maintain focus.

If you too lack focus, pick one task that will make the most difference in your life and get to installing it. Take for example a positive attitude capable of handling all those little things that maybe push you over the edge right now.

I challenge you to Download the Free 7 Days To A New Life pdf. read it and try to keep your life free from those emotional outburst that distract you from your goals. It’s a goal worthy of the effort believe me. I still go back to this challenge regularly to improve my outlook and ability to bring the positive not only to my own life but, to those around me as well. I am the light on a hill shining and hopeful guiding those who come after me toward the truth…

Week 20.5 – When The Body Becomes The Mind, We Are In a Habit

Rewire Your Brain

A habit is something that we do without thinking.

As Dr. Joe Dispenza states in this video, “When The Body Becomes The Mind, We Are In a Habit” . I take that to mean that when we have allowed or purposely programmed our chemical body sufficiently to the point where it no longer needs our brain to execute or choose a response, we no have a habit; for good or bad. The body does not care if it is a positive habit or a negative one at this point. It only knows that a set of circumstances trigger a response and that judgement is no longer necessary.

Can you imagine how our mind atrophies (shrinks) the more we reduce the need to make our own, conscious decisions? Can you say the size of a proverbial pea? This is not what we were designed to do and more importantly, this path of of least resistance and the least amount of growth and accomplishment. As Dr Joe says, “when we can’t think any greater than how we feel, we will never change.” I would qualify that to say we will never change for the betterment of ourselves or others.

If you’ll what and listen carefully, the Doctor speaks of the sub-vocalizations, mental chatter and self-talk that the body and brain conjure to discourage us from follow-thru with our commitments to change. Note that he says we often will hear internal rationalizations like you can start tomorrow, you are unworthy, this doesn’t feel right and the like. If we have become the master observer, we can take this as confirmation that we are nearing the abyss spoken of by Joseph Campbell that occurs at the base of the circular cycle. Rejoice, you are getting near the part where things get better!! This most certainly will not be the end of the chatter but, you have the Law of Substitution and the Law of Dual thought to aid in your efforts to change back to proper way to use your mind and for the body to follow, not to be the master of the system. To allow the body to rule the mind is the path to taking what fate and others hand you only to be constantly disappointed.

This week we spoke of the using negative emotions like fear, anger, guilt, unworthiness and hurt feelings as tools to help us in regaining control of our our body by using our mind. So, out comes the skills bag… We use our skills of observation and introspection (i.e. the SIT) to determine when, why and what triggers our negative emotions. Now we use our skills of tracing effects back to their root cause. Here is the key, we now apply our two favorite laws of the Seven Laws of the Mind (Law of Substitution and the Law of Dual thought) and whalla!!, reverse the perverse! Sorry, I just had the rhyme strike me as an opportunity for lifting the mood a bit (too much hard mental effort). The meaning of perverse I am using is this… (adjective) “(of a person or their actions) showing a deliberate and obstinate desire to behave in a way that is unreasonable or unacceptable, often in spite of the consequences.”

We know what the consequences will be in this case because we are currently or recently have been living in the consequences or effects of our own making. It is these consequences we have all chosen to leave behind and replace with better and sunnier climes.

Let Dr Joe cap this discussion off. Listen, rewind and listen again to his description of True Self-Love. I think you will get the same charge from it as I did as we are human and things that inspire often evoke similar chemicals in all of us. The transmutation of anger, fear, anxiety and guilt harbored in the fiber of the body can be liberated only by the mind. Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to liberate ourselves from flesh and return to a mindful state of control and creation. Doesn’t that fill you with the same hope and faith as it does me? doesn’t it feel true and real? Do you hear the call to your Hero’s Journey? Listen… all real principle and truth comes in the Silence, the SIT.

Week 12 – I Persist Until I Succeed, I Win!

You Gotta Be Willing To Take The Hits

A commitment to persist is a key habit leading to success writes Og Mandino. Sly Stallone age 69, is a success and he says, “you me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life but, it ain’t about how hard you’re hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much can you take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”.

These two men have similar thoughts on views on persistence. Like the young bulls described in the scroll marked III. They were to be scored based on their persistence and how many times they tried again, and again to charge the Picadors.

It has been this week that resolve’s head has been raised. Just as Mark said on our Sunday Mastermind, it has been the renewed Guy in the Glass exercise. Looking yourself in the eye, and in the long view of life, stating that you will not attempt to deceive yourself or others because. So, that combined with daily promises to follow-thru and succeed on delivering my hand-written charter called the DMP.

The above seems a strain to keep up and then… this message in my email; and my “struggles” seems just an excuse!

I’m just completing my post and see an email come from one of my associates from within the Master Key Experience (MKMMA) course. It’s Day Boswell and she has a post entitled Week 12 – Tis the Season … of Family. Now I know there are those here in the mastermind on whom Sly Stallone (aka Rocky Balboa) has nothing on them in the way of persistence in the face of life kicking them around a bit!

Just read her post and see how she easily steps, like a matador to one side, of life’s big challenges with poise and a grounded spirit that almost defies comprehension. Family passing, new children coming into the world, pointed emotional conversations with other family, daughter in surgery needing support and yet the thinker, compassionate side shines through as only Rudolph could to light the way for others to follow. Thank you Day for the exemplary life you lead, sharing it with others like myself in the Master Key Mastermind and for increasing the harmony across the fabric of our lives as your boat raises all others in this harbor.

Week 4 – The Mysterious Source Which Never Sleeps

Exodus 3:14 I Am That I Am

We have been introduced to that “Mysterious Source Which Never Sleeps” by Og Mandino in this our first month. But, until this week, it may be that I have not recognized that both Mandino and Haanel are speaking to the same energy and entity that operates as precisely and accurately as a Timex watch. Yes, we are speaking about the subconscious or “Subby” as we like to call him/her in the MKMMA.

Think about what Charles F Haanel wrote in Part Four of his book The Master Key System starting with paragraph #4 – 11:

4. When you say “I think,” the “I” tells the mind what it shall think; when you say “I go,” the “I” tells the physical body where it shall go; the real nature of this “I” is spiritual, and is the source of the real power which comes to men and women when they come into a realization of their true nature.

5. The greatest and most marvellous power which this “I” has been given is the power to think, but few people know how to think constructively, or correctly, consequently they achieve only indifferent results. Most people allow their thoughts to dwell on selfish purposes, the inevitable result of an infantile mind. When a mind becomes mature, it understands that the germ of defeat is in every selfish thought.

6. The trained mind knows that every transaction must benefit every person who is in any way connected with the transaction, and any attempt to profit by the weakness, ignorance or necessity of another will inevitably operate to his disadvantage.

7. This is because the individual is a part of the Universal. A part cannot antagonize any other part, but, on the contrary, the welfare of each part depends upon a recognition of the interests of the whole.

8. Those who recognize this principle have a great advantage in the affairs of life. They do not wear themselves out. They can eliminate vagrant thoughts with facility. They can readily concentrate to the highest possible degree on any subject. They do not waste time or money upon objects which can be of no possible benefit to them.

9. If you cannot do these things it is because you have thus far not made the necessary effort. Now is the time to make the effort. The result will be exactly in proportion to the effort expended. One of the strongest affirmations which you can use for the purpose of strengthening the will and realizing your power to accomplish is, “I can be what I will to be.”

10. Every time you repeat it realize who and what this “I” is; try to come into a thorough understanding of the true nature of the “I”; if you do you will become invincible; that is, provided that your objects and purposes are constructive and are therefore in harmony with the creative principle of the Universe.

11. If you make use of this affirmation, use it continuously, night and morning, and as often during the day as you think of it, and continue to do so until it becomes a part of you; form the habit.

Now take these into a sit and think on words of scripture about the words I AM. Most of us heard it as “I Am That I Am” in our Sunday school lessons. But, the ancient Hebrew of Exodus 3:14 lacks a future tense as modern English does, yet a few translations render this name as “I Will Be What I Will Be”, given the context of Yahweh promising to be with his people through their future troubles. Note that they include the similar references to another phrase Haanel speaks as having great power for us this week in Part 4, “I Can Be What I Will To Be”. Wow, does that make your hair stand on end like mine?

Again Haanel points out later in Part 19 – 21, you (and your Subby) are the temple of God and Eternal Power;

19. Science goes a little way in its search and stops. Science finds the ever-present Eternal Energy, but Religion finds the Power behind this energy and locates it within man. But this is by no means a new discovery; the Bible says exactly the same thing, and the language is just as plain and convincing: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of the living God?” Here, then, is the secret of the wonderful creative power of the “World Within.”

20. Here is the secret of power, of mastery. To overcome does not mean to go without things. Self-denial is not success. We cannot give unless we get; we cannot be helpful unless we are strong. The Infinite is not a bankrupt and we who are the representatives of Infinite power should not be bankrupts either, and if we wish to be of service to others we must have power and more power, but to get it we must give it; we must be of service.

21. The more we give the more we shall get; we must become a channel whereby the Universal can express activity. The Universal is constantly seeking to express itself, to be of service, and it seeks the channel whereby it can find the greatest activity, where it can do the most good, where it can be of greatest service to mankind.

So, not only is Subby your secret source of power to control your own life but, more so he/she is the link from you to the greatest power in the universe, Eternal Energy, and power, the key to the temple within you! This power is given to you so that you can be the portal through which the Universal can “Give More, Get More”. This is the law of abundance and happiness but, only insomuch as you share your light with others… through service.
